Moving to the Bear Creek Area of Houston, Texas

The Bear Creek and Highway 6 area is a wedge of prime west-by-northwest real estate located between I-10 West and U.S. 290 West, and to the west of the Sam Houston Tollway. The area is home to the Addicks and Barker reservoirs, created in 1938 to control downstream flooding of Buffalo Bayou. These reservoirs cover approximately 26,000 acres and lend the area a natural, small-town feel that persists today. They are also home to some of the area’s largest and most popular parks and natural observation areas, including the 2,154-acre Bear Creek Park, offering trails, sports fields, picnic areas and tennis courts. This area also has a number of established communities, including Copperfield.

Neighborhoods in the Bear Creek Area

Located along Highway 6, just west of U.S. 290, Copperfield was completed in the 1980s and early 1990s as one of Houston’s earliest master-planned communities. Thanks to the scenic restrictions along Highway 6, the recreational areas and the protective covenants put in place by Friendswood Development Co., Copperfield is still a very attractive, desirable and well-maintained community. Other completed neighborhoods in the area include Deerfield Village and Hearthstone.

Today, Towne Lake is one of the newest and largest master-planned communities in the area, which is preserving its natural appeal with hundreds of acres devoted to lakes and parks. It was named the 2016 Master-Planned Community of the Year by the Greater Houston Builder’s Association. Residents in this area are served by two highly successful school districts – Katy ISD and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD.
