When it comes to higher education and workforce training, Fort Bend also excels. Here is a list of some of Fort Bend’s major school districts and educational institutions.

 

Fort Bend Independent School District

One of the most highly regarded school districts in Texas, the Fort Bend Independent School District spans 170 square miles. It is the 7th largest school district in Texas by enrollment, with more than 74,500 students attending 78 campuses. These include 11 high schools and three unique secondary campuses addressing specialized academic need and vocational interests. With more than 10,000 full and part-time employees, FBISD is the largest employer in Fort Bend County. FBISD is also one of the state’s most culturally diverse districts, with more than 90 languages and dialects spoken by its students. FBISD, its campuses and its students are routinely recognized for exemplary achievements by organizations such as The National Merit Scholars Program, the National Association of Music Merchants, and the United States Presidential Scholars Program. The District’s high schools have also earned top rankings in studies from Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report.

 

Katy Independent School District

Serving parts of Fort Bend County, this flourishing school district encompasses 181 square miles, with its eastern boundary stretching to the Energy Corridor, about 16 miles west of Downtown Houston. District boundaries also extend along the Katy Freeway to a few miles west of the City of Katy. More than 73,000 students attend 63 campuses, including 7 four-year high schools. Given the highest possible rating by the Texas Education Agency, Katy ISD offers an outstanding instructional program with facilities, equipment and materials that are among the best in the state. Katy ISD’s Seven Lakes High School is consistently included on Newsweek’s annual list of “America’s Top 500 Public High Schools.” Katy ISD schools also earn some of the highest ratings in Texas from GreatSchools.org and Children At Risk, two nonprofit groups that rank schools based on test scores, the number of students taking advanced classes, graduation rates and other metrics. Most recently, it was named the best school district in the Houston-Metro area by Niche, and was selected for District Administration’s District of Distinction Award.

 

Lamar Consolidated Independent School District

The Lamar Consolidated Independent School District is another major player in the educational lineup for Fort Bend County. Covering more than 384 square miles, LCISD is one of the area’s largest districts geographically, with an enrollment that exceeds 32,368 students at 39 campuses. Some of the newest and largest master-planned communities in the area are located in LCISD, with developers (and new residents) attracted by the district’s high passage rate on standardized tests, its highly educated population (35% have bachelor’s degrees) and high median income level. While welcoming growth, LCISD has kept its small-town values, including campuses with smaller enrollments, allowing students to have more opportunities to participate in leadership roles and extracurricular activities. While valuing its roots, LCISD strives to make sure its students and staff have access to the latest technology. Every year, a new group of teachers attends LCISD’s INTERACT Academy, where they learn about the latest hardware and software and – most importantly – how to use it keep the tech-savvy students engaged in the classroom. Overall, LCISD is a TEA Recognized District, with 75 percent of its schools ranked either Exemplary (11 schools) or Recognized (13 schools).

 

Needville Independent School District

With its motto of “Learn Today, Fly Forever,” Needville ISD prides itself on its exemplary standards, as well as its rich history of academic and co-curricular success. Located entirely in Fort Bend County, NISD has an enrollment of just over 3,191 students at its four campuses, including Needville Elementary, Needville Middle, Needville Junior High and Needville High. The district’s core values include creating a learning organization focused on excellence; providing each student with engaging, challenging and meaningful work; and empowering each student to realize the opportunities that they have as 21st century learners.

 

Stafford Municipal School District

The Stafford Municipal School District maintains its small-school district environment while addressing educational needs of the 21st century. With an enrollment of more than 3,200 students, this mid-sized district is home to five campuses located on a tree-lined, 77-acre complex. SMSD facilities are designed to allow all of the district’s students to attend the same elementary and secondary schools without zoning changes. The Stafford High School College and Career Center houses 12 academy programs designed to prepare students with the technical and professional skills necessary to succeed in today’s high-demand occupational environment. Students have the opportunity to utilize their academic skills in the following career fields: Law/ Criminal Justice, Business Management, Business Administration and Marketing, Graphic Arts, Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, Automotive Technology, and Manufacturing. All of the Academy programs are technically based, rigorous, relevant, and aligned with business and industry standards for the 21st Century workforce. Many of the Academy programs offer articulation and/or dual credit with neighboring postsecondary community colleges allowing students to earn college credit while fulfilling high school graduation requirements. Students in grades K-12 can participate in Robotics and students in grades 3-12 can participate in UIL Academics. Students in grades 6th-8th can learn martial arts through the Kickstart program and secondary students can compete in football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, track, powerlifting, soccer, swimming, and cross-country.
